Matthew Spring
Tar, setar, ud, hurdy-gurdy.
Matthew read Music at the University of Keele and at Magdalen College,
Oxford, where he completed his D.Phil on the lute. He went on to the Royal College of Music to study lute and now follows parallel careers as performer and musicologist. Matthew performs with the groups Chalemie, Folies
Bergeres and in his own show ŒThe Hurdy-Gurdy Man©ˆ. He lectures at various universities including Birmingham, London Guildhall, where he had a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, and De Montfort University, Leicester. He is also head of early music at Bath College of Further Education. His book on the lute in Britain has recently been published by Oxford University Press and future publications include an edition of the Balcarres Manuscript
